Kinme Sashimi & Grill Bar

Yakiniku Don (RM22) *From the Lunch Menu

Classier than what you get in Yoshinoya!!

Sashimi Plate 10 Pieces x 2 (RM29 per portion) *From the lunch menu

We decided to add Amaebi (RM21) and Hotate (RM29) to make the late look prettier?! For the lunch sashimi platter, it was so generous of them to offer us more than 20 slices which was our original offer!

Extra RM5 for one portion of Chawanmushi

This was totally worth the RM5 to add. The egg is so smooth!

Spicy Surprise (RM15)

I never actually thought it would turn out to be a huge roll by itself. I mean for the price they charge, I was expecting a small pathetic roll but it came huge! Boy, the salmon, tuna and avocado nothing less than what you get in five star hotels! Edo Ichi in Publika that servers similar rolls, charges double. Which is an obvious decision to never return again.

Kinme Yaki Special - 1 Pax Portion (RM19)

It was the right decision to order one portion to share for two pax. It's not quite possible for us to finish so much food phew! As for the skewers - onions (tamanegi), beef (gyuniku), chicken thigh (momo), chicken liver (reba).

You won't even believe it - the onion is more expensive than the liver!!! At first glance, I was actually quite disappointed at the boring looking onion, but not until when I took a bite of it. The onion is so sweet and perfectly grilled. Suddenly the onion became the star of the plate! I never had so much love for onions I really wouldn't mind a few more sticks of it!!

I swear the chicken liver is so good the liver is swearing back at me, oh dear what have the chicken liver done to me. I've been liver-fied that I forgot what it's like to dislike liver. I would normally spit it out as I never liked it before - not until I had Kinme's. I still dislike innards, but Kinme is an exceptional case. It's a must try even for liver-haters!!!

They serve cold sake in traditional sake sets - not a usual sight in Klang Valley as most of them tend to serve in a bucket/bowl of ice.

Lunch is pretty good deal - no wonder it's so packed! I would definitely recommend for dinner - it's affordable and portions are amazing! Clearly, we could not finish our food. The sashimi itself filled us up so we had to takeaway the Yakiniku Don which is still super good even after reheating it at home!

I don't know why would anyone complain about their service, perhaps they are busy and can't cater to just you alone. They took the extra effort to get us a mini cake from a nearby shop because I couldn't get one in time. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality!

Chill Skybar

So, a friend introduced Chill Skybar as one of the best in HCMC. Apparently, it's one of the most stylist and beautiful bar in HCMC. So let's check it out.

We decided to pay a visit during Happy Hour - I made the initiative to make a reservation and all prior to our trip, which turns out that it is not necessary, but recommended.

The place was only half full, so no issues with arriving without a reservation actually. But you need to make sure you're dressed for it - no slippers or flip flops. But fret not, if you really turn up in flops they have shoes for you to wear. How nice of them - just one problem, it's not a pretty pair so don't complain!

This bar isn't the best for sunset - it has a great city view, but sunset is on the other side of the city with less attractive buildings.

Don't wear a mini skirt unless you want it to be blown straight to your face! The wind is so strong at the outdoor bar.

Cocktails for happy hour is pretty reasonable - VND150k / USD6.70 per cocktail but don't expect it to be superb. Everything's expensive at any skybar.

For non-happy hour, these cocktails are from VND250k of what we call USD11 for very normal cocktail. Their cocktails are worth only for what they charge during happy hour.

Nevertheless, the presentation is very attractive. The cocktails are not strong, very mild and subtle you can walk straight even after 4-5 glasses or so.

The city view.

I think it's nice to have a drink or two for happy hour if you're visiting  Ho Chi Minh City. It's advisable to be here right at 5.30pm as the crowd comes in only after half 6; better for photos too!

P/S: Don't order water. They refused to serve hot water - someone had to take meds and did not feel like having a cocktail. Unfortunately, they don't serve hot water. They offered the tiny Evian bottle of what, 330ml and it costs about VND120k not inclusive of tax?!?!?! I'm quite confused, almost USD5.50 for that bottle, nah.

Family Mart Malaysia

So everybody knows Family Mart is in Malaysia now... That popular Japanese convenient store. It made headlines and people literally went gaga over it.

I have to agree with some comments that they are not fully 100% Japanese - but then again, it's not fair to condemn them just because they carry Malaysian food too. It is in Malaysia, so expect to see local goods and food in store.

Some local delights.

Microwavable food - a mixture of local and Japanese food. Like any where else in the world, if a convenient store opens, expect your most popular dish in the country to be in the rack as well. So yay for Nasi Lemak!

Then there are sandwiches, some Japanese cakes and desserts - honestly what more can you ask for? Oh, the chicken katsu sandwich looks really good too - for RM7.90. The portion looks pretty generous for that price!

The oden we have in Malaysia has two flavours - the original and the tomyum. We had the fish balls combo and added a few other items and it came up to less than RM10, not too bad.

Matcha ice cream for RM2.90 and the Vanilla for RM1.90? It was somewhere along that price.

I really like their oden and ice cream. Oh, and their cappuccino too. They have pre-packed cups for their coffee which made us feel so much more confident with their ice (instead of sourcing from some random ice shop and you're not too sure about their ice handlers). Nothing to complain, really. Welcome Family Mart!

Yellow Brick Road

I've always wanted to try Yellow Brick Road - for a year but it never occur to me until I saw it on The Entertainer. I've always thought that they only serve pancakes - well they do serve a selection of brunch plates too.

Peter Pandan (RM23)

The pancakes are very fluffy, the American style, topped with a scoop of ice cream, some local fruits and syrup. I love pancakes especially fluffy ones - this plate certainly did not fail.

Pulled Beef Benedict (RM25)

I'm a fan of pulled pork but this place doesn't serve pork, beef could do too. I did not have high hopes for it, thinking it'll never be as good as the pork but it's turns out to be better than pork! It's very flavourful (typical brown sauce) and tender. Topped with perfectly poached eggs!

This place is rather packed on weekends and there are limited tables. One thing to note - not all staffs are familiar with The Entertainer, and if you're planning to use it, make sure a senior staff is available to monitor.

Cục Gạch Quán

The quaint little restaurant that Angelina Jolie loves!

There are a few different sections - we just chose to go to the busiest area.

Food for the night.

Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls / Goi Cuon Tom Thit (VND80k / USD3.60)

Vietnamese Pumpkin Flower Soup / Can Rau Tom (VND90k / USD4)

Something so unique that you should order! I mean, how often do you get to drink flower soup.

Beef Wrapped in Betel Leaf / Bo Cuon La Lot Nuong (VND120k / USD 5.30)

Soft Shell Crab / Cua Lot Rang Muoi (VND220k / USD9.75)

Pork Stew in Claypot / Thit Khia (VND95k / USD4.20)

Red Bean / Che Dau Den & Grass Jelly / Suong Sam (VND40k / USD1.80 each)

Did not really enjoy the desserts, some of us did as they find it's quite refreshing. But I guess it's a little too unique for me. The green jelly tastes like grass, but you'll never know if you don't try.

Coconut Juice / Dua Tuoi (VND40k / USD1.80)

That weird straw - which is good for environment. Except my coconut juice tasted very strong of that plant smell! Most of them loved it - I find that the idea is fantastic, at least we are not creating wastage! But the taste is really not for me so I figured I will never order their coconut again.

We just could not help taking photos of the place - it's so pretty!

We couldn't decide what to eat and decided to return for lunch. Surprisingly the section we went to for dinner was empty, so we proceeded to the other side of the road where their main kitchen is at.

Stir-fry Pork (VND130k / USD6)

Deep Fried Tofu with Lemongrass and Chilli (VND95k / USD4.20)

They love to introduce this dish to all of us - which is their signature but I really don't find it any special. Deep-fried tofu is quite common in Chinese cuisine, the only difference is the very mild lemongrass and chilli spices. I could actually give it a skip for it - it's just fried tofu.

Healthy brown rice! Did not notice this on our first visit!

Deep-Fried Viet Spring Rolls (VND80k / USD3.60)

I prefer the fried over the fresh. It's personal preference though.

Starfruit and Clam Soup (VND90k / USD4)

This is something different from the usuals - starfruit soup?!?!

Soft Shell Crab (VND220k / USD9.75)

Sauteed Zucchini Flowers (VND80k / USD3.60)

This is a MUST order!!! Another flower greens we had for the trip. There are a lot of flower dishes here in HCMC that everyone should really try. Their flowers are something different you may not get it in your country.

Lunch food spread

Do order their juice - it costs VND85k / USD3.80 for it but it's a bottle and good to fill up two cups! It's also very refreshing for such a hot weather!

Banana Fritter (VND25k / USD1.10)

I didn't enjoy their desserts for dinner, so I was a little skeptical with the yogurt. Just worried that it may turn out to be something too unique.

Homemade Yogurt (VND30k / USD1.35)

The perfect way to end our meal - Viet coffee please!

I could understand why Angelina Jolie loves this place. Everything we had were all great - perhaps with some really average dishes but majority are above average and dishes I would definitely order again. Also, to add on, the place is very comfortable as compared to street eats. Definitely a 5-star in  HCMC!
