Phở Lệ

That phở place recommended by our local Uber driver which is quite popular among the locals. It's located at HCMC's busy Chinatown. Be prepared that the place is not very clean, food waste is somehow just everywhere on the floor.

Phở with Fresh Beef Slices

Phở with Beef Balls and Brisket.
(possibly with flank too since I told her I wanted everything!)

Phở with Beef Balls and Beef Slices

That very usual sight in phở shops, it is by default that they all serve with a plate of raw sprouts, basil, mint, lime and chilli. Warning - Vietnamese chilli is extra spicy, don't try to put more than one if you can't take spicy food. As for the leaves, it's good to put a bit of everything for better flavours. Adding fish sauce into our bowl of phở instantly made it so flavourful!!

It can be so difficult to order when we can't speak Vietnamese. Thankfully, there are many Viets who can speak Mandarin or Cantonese. Always try your luck, you'll never know! The lady at the stove/counter, speaks Cantonese and she took our orders with no problems at all. Overall, perfect! Besides hygiene issues and being served way too tiny coconuts, we enjoyed everything else.

Ole Sayang

Very popular Nyonya place in Melaka.

It's really busy during lunch hours, so be there earlier to avoid the queue.

Fried fish topped with not spicy belacan

Petai Udang, which is not spicy too

Otak-Otak

Ayam Pongteh

Kangkung Belacan

Cincalok Omelette

Fried Tofu

Fried Squid

Nyonya Asam Fish

Curry Chicken

Cendol Ais

Ole Sayang is surprisingly popular! There is always a queue during peak timers. In fact if you do a Google Search for Nyonya food this place pops up immediately in the Search Results! That was actually how I found out about this place too.

Overall the food were alright, plenty of Nyonya choices to pick from. The food aren't spicy at all, not even a single spicy dish actually. I'm average when it comes to chilli, but even the Petai that is usually spicy was quite sweet. Nyonya food in KL is surprisingly spicier (and nicer too). It is OK for those of you who are visiting and would love to have some decent Nyonya food. I have not had the chance to try all Nyonya places in Melaka, but I prefer Anak Nyonya @ Jonker over Ole Sayang.

Restoran Say Huat

The saltiest wantan I've ever had in my life. The meat in the wantan is seriously super salty I cannot imagine... Salt must be free.

Pan Mee is generally good. Broth from some anchovy stock, great to satisfy Pan Mee cravings. Not the best in Klang Valley but still comfort food for people in the area.

The worst Hakka Mee EVER. The "black sauce" used for this noodle is very watery and with heaps of soy sauce. Minced meat was not even fragrant, no pork lard or oil to compliment. The bowl of noodle was so difficult to even swallow. This is really so bad and I'm clearly unhappy that it's even called Hakka Noodle, this is no where near to close to Hakka.

There is ALWAYS one hawker stall out of the many which is not great in one coffeeshop. In this case, just AVOID the Hakka Noodle in Say Huat. I've also received comments that one of the stalls selling Fried Rice is very good. Maybe next time!

Ichiriki Japanese Restaurant

On my first attempt, Ichiriki left a very good impression. I liked their food, not particularly cheap but it tasted great so I was rather satisfied. They are famous for their Katsu dishes.

I've tried their Katsu for the first time and I loved it. I even recommended people to try their food. Which was why I went back again for the second time.... A year later.

We got the Groupon voucher for two different sets, so those were all paid for.

On top of that, we ordered some sake and green tea so it came to a different bill.

The dispute started when the bill arrived. I was skeptical with the calculation so I made such a bad choice to ASK.

There were many waiting staffs who were nice but they are unsure how it was being calculated (it was not the few cents I'm being calculative, I just want to know because from what I've manually calculated it didn't seem to match).

There was this one lady which looked like the manager, she attended to my question without actually answering me. She just pointed and said here. System calculates, just like that. Uh.... That does not answer how did you get the total amount?? She hurried through my question and ran off. I got very irritated because she was not even answering me and she walked off just like that. I signalled for her again and she got annoyed. She raised her voice and me and said it's correct (without answering me again). I understand that the store is busy, we just want to know the proper calculation and leave! I have to know what is this about before paying the bill isn't it? It's part of our rights!

The best part of the night - I asked her to get the manager over to do the explanation and she answered, "I AM THE MANAGER'S WIFE. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?". Seriously. What. The. How can you ever utter that to customers????? What kind of shitty service is this??????????????? I went out, straight up to the manager and told his about his wife's good deeds. All I wanted was to know how did you calculate, just tell me step-by-step that isn't that difficult but there was no answer at all. The man understood my question, went through quickly and apologised on his wife's behalf.

I can't absolutely find any reason to go back to this place. That MANAGER'S WIFE is absolutely appalling and my gosh, service is ridiculous they should not even charge the 10%. So there you go, no more Ichiriki and Miss Manager's Wife nonsense. I really pity the poor manager, not sure if he or she is the manager of the place.

However, overall food is pretty decent but I wouldn't really consider this place for Japanese food. I will also recommend the rest of you to opt for other Japanese places, there is another Japanese in the same shopping mall, Hokkaido Ichiba which is much better in terms of both food and service.

Mews Café

This cafe in Penang serves Laksa and cocktails. How can I not love this beautiful typical Malaysian Kopitiam that serves local delights and alcohol!

They also serve a range of other Asian selections; Malaysian's Nasi Kerabu, Laksa, Beef Rendang or even Vietnamese Spring Rolls. There's live music on Saturdays after 8pm, which makes the place a  nice hangout place too. The place is not really that big so reservation is recommended.

Miru Dessert Cafe

Another cute cafe in Uptown..

Japanese-inspired cafe, for those of you who wants desserts during brunch, they have so many Toast selections... Good to kill two types cravings with a stone! The Shibuya Honey Toasts seems to be one of the most popular picks by most (based on observation).

However, I just came from lunch so it wasn't a good idea to get more food. Got myself a Shake it Passion (RM18).

Very beautifully presented, shave ice with mix flavours and beautiful edible flowers.

Mum's Place

Some of the photos from my favourite Nyonya place in PJ.

 Foo Yoong Egg (RM 14.80)

Daun Keledek / Sweet Potato Leaves (RM15)

Beef Rendang (RM18.30)

Portuguese Devil Curry (RM18.30)

Otak-otak (RM16.90)

Fried Cencaru with Cili Padi (RM25.80)

Mum's Favourite Terung Black Pepper (RM15)

Terung with Chilli Padi Paste (RM15)

Steamed Beancurd with Minced Chicken and Gravy (RM15)

 Steamed Egg (RM 15.80)

 Ayam Pongteh (RM 18.30)

Pulut Tekan with Kaya (RM7.30)

There is no corkage if you're bringing your own alcohol (how wonderful!), but if you require ice bucket there will be a small fee.

Frankly speaking, there is nothing that I do not like from all of the dishes I've ordered. Spices are great, spicy dishes turned out to be super spicy (though some of my friends thinks it's bearable and asked for more chilli!), non-spicy food are flavourful. Prices are reasonable too considering that it's fully air-conditioned. If you're looking for good quality Nyonya food, just travel all the way to PJ from KL. It's totally worth it!

Mum's Place is better than so many Nyonya places I've tried in Melaka. No need to hit Melaka for good Nyonya food!

Huỳnh Hoa

We found this place by searching online, apparently it is one of the popular Banh Mi shops in Ho Chi Minh City. It is searchable through Google Maps.

Don't make the same mistake as us - the shop opens only in the evening, presumably after 3pm. Expect to queue for those delicious toasts!

The baguettes are freshly toasted, lightly heated in machine before preparing.

One Banh Mi costs 32,000 VND (approx. USD 1.45) and so on. On an side note, most Bánh Mì I've paid for did not cost more than USD 1. So the first thing that came into my mind was, "Hey, they better be good!".

Look at some of those interesting colours, I'm actually so confused and I have no clue what's what.

But putting them together, it's superb! Well we can't understand each other so I just pointed and said everything. I'm guessing they have choices too... but I'll just have the standard.

After an hour, the baguette is still crusty! Meat combo with cheese is darn good. Certainly one of the good ones around! I would definitely recommend this place despite being more expensive than average Bánh Mì in HCMC.
