Restaurant 1919

Sadly, with GST being implemented in Malaysia, the prices went up. :(

I've been here a couple of times, trying out different dishes. Click here for earlier blog post

The wine prices are really a little too high - the cheapest one goes from about RM150. Corkage fee is RM50. Wine bottles should be priced about RM100 - RM120 at most for lower grade wine. Just not worth ordering at all, but we still ordered it anyway.

Philippines Eggplant (RM15.90)

I've had this before and I really love it. Eggplant coated with light tempura batter with a little sweet and spicy chilli sauce.

Nyonya Fried Rice (RM12.90)

It looks just like another plate of fried rice, but boy it is perfect! Sauce evenly spread, rice not sticking to each other and that "wok hei"! Don't judge that thing just by looking at it, it's way better than it seems!

Nyonya Style Sotong

Salted Egg Yolk Prawns

Braised tofu with minced chicken

Sizzling Hot Plate Beef

Fish curry

1919's special tofu

King Sauce Chicken

This was the worst recommendation by the manager. I did not find anything special about it, it's just exactly like sweet and sour chicken with no sauce, pineapples or tomatoes. It's very sweet so nothing special.

Not sure which Sizzling Tofu this was, but this, please do yourself a favour and do not order. It's horribly bland.

Dessert

Some dishes are worth ordering, some are not. Generally most dishes are good we just happen to find out some are too sweet or too bland. They Nyonya selection seems to earn better points than Chinese selections. Also, I realise that when the place is too packed, service is not as great. We had to signal 3-4 times before he actually came to us. He even attended to customers who came in later despite us signalling for so many times which is rather disappointing. I mean, I like the place, I have been promoting and I'm a returning customer too so I'm not sure why is he being biased. It's perhaps just one of those days. But I'm sure if you're closer to the dude or if you return much more often, the service will be better. For unfamiliar faces, he tend to shove them to the side.

Nevertheless, I would recommend this place for dinner. During lunch service is quite bad, they refuse to serve fried rice which is weird. It's not like we are not ordering other meat or vegetables. Oddly strange?
