Mario Cittadini @ Mandarin Grill Kuala Lumpur

One-Star Michelin Chef Mario Cittadini was in Kuala Lumpur from 11th to 14th January 2017. Fortunately, we managed to book four seats for lunch on Saturday, which coincides with a friend's birthday. They even prepared a cake for the birthday girl - with a card signed by all their staffs! Such lovely personal touch there. 

As for the lunch courses, it starts from RM148 for 3 courses, RM168 for 4 courses and RM188 for 5 courses. We opted for the 5 courses - 2 antipasti, 1 primi piatti, secondi piatti and dessert. Actually all four of us had practically everything from the menu. Not sure if we had extras or our some of our antipasti/primi piatti portions were split evenly - we had 7 courses each!!!

Antipasti Polipo E Patate - Charred octopus salad, saffron and lemon potato emulsion

Antipasti Cappesante - Seared Hokkaido scallops, romaine lettuce, passion fruit, bottarga

Antipasti Uovo - Slow poached organic egg, liquid salad, shrimps spezzatino, anchovy, herbs vinaigrette

Primi Piatti Tortelli - Parmesan emulsion, black truffle caviar

Primi Piatti Risotto - Black squid ink, smoked oyster, grilled squid

Possibly the only dish that got us confused - I see no smoked oyster, I taste no smoked oyster, in fact none of us did. Unless the black stuff are the oyster. Where is the mysterious oyster?!

Primi Piatti Fettucine - Tagliolini, grandma's meatballs ragout

Secondi Piatti Merluzzo - Poached Atlantic cod fish, childhood memory white sauce

I thought the fish was fresh, but boy the sauce was absolutely bland. It's great for kids though.

Secondi Piatti Brasato - Slow braised Australian beef cheek, mashed potato, crispy leek... Not.

The chef upgraded the beef for us!! Instead of serving the beef cheek, we got the wagyu. How sweet.

Secondi Piatti Wagyu - Australian Sher Wagyu black label sirloin B.M.S. 8, roasted cauliflower, bagna bauda, roasting juices

Secondi Piatti Pollo - Chicken breast “chaud-froid”, savoy cabbage, black truffle

Dolci Mimosa - White chocolate biscuit, lemon curd, chamomile sorbet

I've booked it way ahead with a note that I wanted the table next to the window. Upon arrival, we were placed at the darkest corner right at the kitchen's exit. Such a disappointment - but this was sorted immediately. We were placed right next to the window at the end of the room!

Thank you very much for the hospitality once again, Mandarin Grill. It has always been a pleasure dining here.
